Hold the Hobnobs

Making a meal of the teatime bite

- Eleanor Steafel

A cup of tea and a sandwich doesn’t have quite the same ring as a builder’s and a biscuit, but I’m on board. Keep your chocolate Hobnobs: I’d rather have a sausage roll.

I’m not alone. The young prefer savoury snacks with their tea – perhaps because they favour multiple smaller meals a day, so are more likely to punctuate their afternoon with a cheese toastie than a gingernut.

Under-30s are keen on fruit with their tea too. Fine if we’re talking a crisp apple with a chunk of cheddar and oatcakes, but I’m not sure I want to wash down a clementine with a milky cuppa. But a spicy samosa? Sign me up.
