Biden has ‘no regrets’ after classified files found in garage

- By Nick Allen in Washington

JOE BIDEN said yesterday that he had “no regrets” after classified documents were found in his garage.

Under mounting pressure to explain why he was in possession of classified material as a private citizen, the US President said: “I think you’re gonna find there’s nothing there. We found a handful of documents were filed in the wrong place. We immediately turned them over to the National Archives and the Justice Department.”

Merrick Garland, the attorney general, has appointed Robert Hu as special counsel to oversee a Justice Department inquiry into the handling of the files.

Mr Biden said he was “fully co-operating and looking forward to getting this resolved quickly”, adding: “I’m following what the lawyers have told me they want me to do.”

It came after days of the White House declining to answer questions and growing Republican demands to explain why Mr Biden was in possession of the documents.

The uproar threatens to overshadow an expected announcement of Mr Biden’s candidacy in the 2024 election.

Classified documents from his time as vice president were found by Mr Biden’s own lawyers on four occasions in recent months.

The first batch was found on Nov 2 at the offices of the Penn Biden Center think tank in Washington. Others were discovered on Dec 20 in the garage of his home in Wilmington, Delaware.

Then, on Jan 11 and Jan 12, classified documents were found in the library at his home in Wilmington.
