‘Trailblazing’ female Muslim convert praised
A ceremony has been held to commemorate the life of a Victorian believed to be the first woman to convert to Islam on British soil.
Born Francess Elizabeth Murray, she became a Muslim in 1887 and adopted the name Fatima, after one of Prophet Muhammad’s daughters.
She also helped to set up the UK’S earliest-known mosque and was appointed treasurer of the Liverpool Muslim Institute.
British Muslims have described her as a “trailblazer” and a crowdfunder recently installed a headstone at her grave in Anfield Cemetery.
