That’s All Right as Line of Duty star sings Elvis classic

HE’S best known for laying down the law, but over the weekend actor Adrian Dunbar “ripped the roof ” off a London jazz bar as he laid down a tune.

The 64-year-old, who plays Ted Hastings, the ethically upstanding senior investigat­ing officer, in the BBC drama

Line of Duty surprised an audience in London’s Covent Garden with an impromptu rendition of the Elvis classic

That’s All Right.

Dressed in a white shirt and dark jacket, Dunbar crooned his way through the number at the QT Bar without the aid of a lyric sheet, said Leo Green, a longtime friend who led the band that accompanie­d him on Friday night.“he ripped the roof off,” added Green and left an audience of around 120 stunned. One person later asked him: “That wasn’t really him singing was it?”

Green said he and Dunbar have been friends for many years and the actor was “a huge music fan”, adding that he expected Dunbar to be there, as he hadinvited him, but he didn’t expect him to sing.

At around 8.30pm he nodded that he wanted to get up and sing, said Green, then said: “Let’s do some Elvis. Which one?” before settling on the 1954 hit.

“He then just jumped up,” said Green. “People were really surprised, with many doing a double take, saying ‘hang on, is that Ted Hastings up there’?”

People can be heard cheering and clapping in footage that was shot during his performanc­e.

Dunbar sang the one song and left at around 11pm. Born in Northern Ireland, he attended Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and has appeared in films such as My Left Foot, The Crying

‘People were really surprised. One person later asked: ‘That wasn’t really him singing was it?’

Game and The General. He also co-wrote and starred in the 1991 comedy Hear My Song, which was later nominated for best original screenplay at the Bafta Awards.

However, he is arguably best known for his starring role in all six series of Line Of Duty, alongside Martin Compston and Vicky Mcclure.

His performanc­e on Saturday adds him to the list of famous faces who have visited the speakeasy-style QT Bar below the Middle Eight hotel. Green said the singers Beverly Knight and Van Morrison and the actor Max Beasley were among them.
