Zahawi’s tax affairs

sir – By ordering an inquiry into Nadhim Zahawi’s non-payment of tax, Rishi Sunak is kicking the issue into the long grass to the detriment of his own leadership and the Tory party.

For Mr Zahawi to have made such a mistake suggests he was not fit to be chancellor. Nor should he continue in his present position.

sir – When will Conservative MPS grow some backbone and be proud that there are successful capitalists among their number? Wealthy people have complicated tax situations and are often in dispute with HMRC.

Too many Tories simply dive for cover at the first sign of trouble.
