Barclays appoints Kingman as high street chairman

-

The former Treasury mandarin who oversaw the bailout of Britain’s banks during the financial crisis has been appointed chairman of Barclays’ UK retail arm.

Sir John Kingman, who is also chairman of FTSE 100 insurer L&G, will join the high street bank’s board as a non-executive director and oversee the group’s ring-fenced bank from June, the lender said. Sir John will retain his role at L&G, but will leave his position as chairman of Tesco Bank.

Marc Moses, the former HSBC chief risk officer, is also joining as a nonexecutive to replace Mike Ashley, an accounting veteran who will have also spent nine years on the bank’s board.

Mr Ashley will leave after the bank’s annual general meeting later this year.
