Andrew Mcgibbon explores how a piece of music, or a melody, travels through time, changing along the way as it’s reinterpreted. Future episodes will look at Plaisir d’amour and The House of the Rising Sun, but the first focuses on My Funny Valentine, which began as a 1937 show tune on Broadway before going on to become Chet Baker’s theme tune in 1954, followed by modern reincarnation courtesy of rapper Ye, R&B artist Justina Valentine and singer Hadassah. This exercise in musical archaeology and genealogy is assisted by musicologists Laura Tunbridge and Professor Richard Dumbrill.
