Man who served 17 years for rape may be innocent

-

A man who served 17 years in prison for a rape he says he did not commit may be allowed to appeal against his conviction for the first time.

Andrew Malkinson, now 57, was convicted of attacking a woman in Greater Manchester in 2003 and jailed for life the following year.

He was released in 2020 and new ways of analysing DNA have cast doubt on his conviction. It was also found that DNA from the victim’s clothing matched that of another man on the national police database.

Greater Manchester Police yesterday confirmed that a man had been arrested and released on bail in light of the new evidence.
