Mountain railway opens after four-year shutdown

-

Britain’s highest railway is due to open today after a four-year closure for essential repairs.

The Cairngorm Mountain Railway, near Aviemore in the Highlands, is Scotland’s only funicular railway.

It was closed in September 2018 over structural problems but the Covid pandemic, shortages of materials and bad weather later increased costs and delayed the repairs.

Weather permitting, it will now run regularly on its 1.2-mile route, taking skiers to the top of the slopes in about five minutes.

The re-opening comes after rigorous quality and safety testing to allow operations to restart.
