Menuhin and carnival ‘queen’ win blue plaques

-

Yehudi Menuhin and Claudia Jones, known as “the founding spirit of the Notting Hill Carnival”, will be honoured with blue plaques this year.

The plaque commemorating the life of Menuhin, a violinist and composer, will be placed on his six-storey house in Belgravia, where the American-born musician lived for the last 16 years of his life until 1999.

Jones, a journalist and anti-racism campaigner, will be honoured with a plaque laid at the shared house where she lived in Vauxhall, south London, for four years from the late 1950s.

English Heritage said figures from the world of music, social reform and politics had been honoured this year.
