Bear face cheek as Rocky Mountain Zoolander poses for 400 selfies

- By Jamie Johnson

THE key to taking a good “selfie” is finding the right angle.

A head tilt, looking into the distance or gazing into the lens, there are plenty of poses to choose from.

When wildlife officials in Colorado checked the footage from one of their trail cameras in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, they were stunned to find that a wandering black bear had perfected them all.

The Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) organisation, whose camera shot the images, said: “Of the 580 photos captured, about 400 were bear selfies.” Most of them are so close up and candid, that it appears the bear has taken them itself. Originally taken in November, they were reshared online this week and quickly went viral.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s northeast region, which covers Boulder, shared the tweet and quipped: “Felt cute, might delete later.”

A social media likened the images to to the poses in the Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson film Zoolander: “There’s some Blue Steel in the 3rd picture… hire that bear model!”

Another joked: “Is my snout too long?” To gain a better understanding of the ecosystem, OSMP set up nine motion-detecting cameras across 46,000 acres. The cameras are set up in corridors where animals are likely to travel, such as road underpasses.
