Police to tackle ‘sick’ Hillsborough chants
Police chiefs have said action is needed to tackle “disgusting” Hillsborough chants at football matches as they issued an apology to the families of the 97 fans who were unlawfully killed in the 1989 disaster in Sheffield.
Martin Hewitt, the chairman of the National Police Chiefs Council, said: “I am deeply sorry for the tragic loss of life, and for the pain and suffering that the families of the 97 victims experienced on that day and in the many years that have followed.”
But he also addressed the spectacle of rival football supporters mocking the tragedy in sick chants, saying: “It is disgusting and action needs to be taken to stop people doing that.”
