sir – Dorothy Irvin (Letters, January 30) argues that there is still a case for coins of lower value.

If the cost of the item she bought on her shopping trip had been £1.20 instead of £1.19, the problem with the penny would not have occurred. I doubt whether such an increase would have put her off the purchase.

It is time to do away with the copper coins at least, and probably with the 5p too.
