Worthwhile work
sir – Although I am “back to work” in my fifties after my policing career (report, January 30), I do sometimes wonder why I bother.
I love my second career as a university lecturer, but the amount that the Treasury takes back each month leaves my remuneration little better than that of a missionary.
If Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor, is serious about requiring those of my age group to return to work, he would do well to start incentivising us with tax and national insurance breaks.
