Robert Eggers’s ferocious film stars Robert Pattinson as Ephraim Winslow, the taciturn new apprentice to Willem Dafoe’s lighthouse keeper Thomas Wake, who is something like a cross between Captain Haddock and Gollum. As the film begins, both men arrive at their post through a cloak of fog, braced for the coming four-week shift; as time passes, their rivalry deepens and secrets spill out.
