The brutal truth
SIR – The Twentieth Century Society has form in leaping to the defence of brutalist concrete structures that local people seem to hate, and Bristol’s Rupert Street spiral car park (Leading Article, February 24) is just such a case.
However, while not at all wishing to defend the building, I would point out that to replace it with a 21-storey student accommodation block would not be an aesthetic improvement.
The historic centre of Bristol, despite the best efforts of both the Luftwaffe and post-war planners, still retains a fine skyline of beautiful church towers, and another undistinguished high-rise block will not enhance this.
