AI ‘better at choosing organs than surgeons’
Artificial intelligence (AI) is better than surgeons at picking donor organs for transplant patients, Oxford researchers believe, and could help hundreds more people receive new kidneys and livers.
The National Institute for Health and Care Research has awarded more than £1million to a project building an algorithm that can choose the best organs for transplants using AI and a “memory” of thousands of images.
The team behind the Organ Quality Assessment (ORQA) technology, which includes experts from Oxford University, say it could result in up to 200 more patients receiving kidney transplants and 100 more receiving liver transplants every year in the UK.
