Yours for over £300m: London’s most valuable house

- By Riya Makwana

BRITAIN’S most valuable house has been put on the market with a price tag of more than £300m after reportedly falling into receivership.

The Holme, which overlooks Regent’s Park in London and was once described by the critic Ian Nairn as offering “a definition of western civilisation in a single view”, is expected to attract a parade of wealthy potential buyers from around the world.

It has been owned by the Saudi royal family since 2015, but is now said to be in the control of receivers following the lapse of a loan. The property has been described by experts as “the White House of Regent’s Park” and is said to be valued in a region north of £300m.

If a sale of The Holme was achieved at the expected price, it would set a record for the most valuable house ever traded in London, replacing the Chinese bil- lionaire Cheung Chung-kiu’s purchase of a property in Knightsbridge for £210m in 2020.

The mansion is being marketed by agents Beauchamp Estates and Knight Frank.

Abdullah bin Khaled bin Sultan Al Saud, a Saudi royal, is listed as the mansion’s

owner in Land Registry records. While the kingdom’s ruling family has a net worth of more than $1.4trillion (£1.2trillion), the current crown prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud has sought to tighten spending. A threeyear loan of around £160m secured against the property was issued at the end of 2019 by London-based private equity firm, according to the property website React News.

Security was also provided through assets including a flat in New York, a property in Lake Como in Italy, planes and other investments. However, the property was reportedly put on the market after the loan expired.

The 40-bedroom Holme mansion, built in 1818, was originally the home of James Burton, a Georgian developer. It was later leased by Bedford College before becoming a place of private residence again.
