El Chapo’s lawyer launches fresh career as a singer

- By James Badcock in Madrid

THE lawyer who defended El Chapo, the Mexican cartel leader, has launched a music career by releasing a song about an attorney who falls in love with her client.

Mariel Colon, 29, represented Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and his wife, Emma Coronel, both of whom are now serving sentences in US prisons.

Her song La Abogada (The Lawyer) features an attorney pleading with a judge to excuse her from her task of defending her male client.

“Today I’m here to defend my heart,” she sings, before the video cuts to a scene between the lawyer and her client in which she says she shared her bed with him, but he proved to be a liar. I am no longer your defence attorney, your lawyer,” she sings.

Describing her career change, Ms

Colon said: “I’m a singer who became a lawyer. I thought this was the perfect moment to launch my career as a singer, because I know I have a big talent.”

“My plan was to become an attorney for the music industry, but ended up being a criminal attorney and that changed everything,” she explained.

Ms Colon, who also briefly represented Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire paedophile, before his suicide, said in an interview: “I think El Chapo is proud of seeing me as an artist.”

She added that El Chapo’s wife was supportive of the cosmetic surgery she underwent before releasing the song.

“I’m waiting impatiently for her to get out of prison to start new projects together,” she said of Ms Coronel, who was sentenced to three years in 2021 after admitting helping her husband, who is serving a life term, run the Sinaloa Cartel drug-trafficking empire.
