For your ties only

sir – According to Ian Fleming’s From Russia, with Love, James Bond mistrusted anyone with a Windsor knot (Letters, March 1), as it was “the mark of a cad”. He was right, as the supposedly British wearer turned out to be a Russian assassin.

However, Sean Connery often wore one in the Bond films.

sir – The best solution for dealing with a short tie is certainly a waistcoat (Letters, February 28).

Conversely, there is nothing more egregious than a long tie protruding from the bottom of one. Doubling back the excess length with a ladies’ hair grip is the neatest remedy.
