Growing wings
Scientists have already solved the problem of dealing with a wine glass at a buffet lunch. They have invented a prosthetic thumb to hold the object while being operated by a footpedal. It might also be handy for texting. But, as we report today, ambitions for robotic attachments are growing daily. In time, tentacles might be available – or wings. Tentacles could be a boon to a multitasking parent, though control might prove as difficult as learning to play the organ. Wings belong to the world of dreams or myth. The musculature for flapping wings needs to be unfeasibly powerful; gliding may be easier. Birds have sacrificed the convenience of forelimbs for the sake of wings, but few of us would make the same choice – unless those scientists fit us up with a trunk or two for close and dexterous tasks.
