Why traffic flows better on German motorways

-

sir – Terry Lloyd (“Driven to lane hogging”, Letters, February 28) raises a problem that appears unique to driving in Britain.

I have just returned from driving through Germany, where lane discipline is infinitely better than in Britain, and where problems with lorries don’t exist.

The reasons are obvious. In Germany, lorries are required to drive at a slower speed than cars, and the lanes in which they are permitted to drive are carefully regulated.

If we are to see any improvement in the flow of traffic on British motorways, we need our Government to pass the same legislation as exists in Germany and for it to be enforced properly. This would be beneficial for both the economy and the environment.

sir – Would it not be more sensible to change the guidance to allow more undertaking as well as overtaking, as they do in North America?

Traffic flows freely without the need for the tailgating that invariably happens on British motorways.
