Youtube faces investigation over children’s data
Britain’s data protection regulator is to investigate whether Youtube is illegally collecting information from millions of children.
Charity group 5Rights has lodged a complaint against the video-sharing platform over claims it gathers data on the location, viewing habits and preferences of up to 5m children.
Campaigners argue this breaches the UK’S Children Code, privacy rules introduced in 2020.
The Information Commissioner’s Office has now said it will consider the complaint carefully.
A Youtube spokesman highlighted privacy measures it has already taken, including introducing more protective default settings and a dedicated children’s app.
