Keep e-scooters off pavements, says judge in death case
E-SCOOTERS do not belong on pavements, a judge said yesterday as he sentenced a 14-year-old boy for causing the death of a pensioner in a collision.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, hit 71-year-old pedestrian Linda Davis on June 2 last year while riding his e-scooter, Nottingham Youth Court was told.
He stayed at the scene in Rainworth, Notts, and called 999. He said he had been doing about 20mph.
Mrs Davis, who suffered a head injury, died six days later.
Giving the boy a 12-month referral order, District Judge Leo Pyle said: “Pavements are for pedestrians, and people in wheelchairs, or babies in prams. They are supposed to be free of vehicles of any type. This mode of transport should not be there. This tragic incident was avoidable.”
The boy admitted causing death by driving a vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
As well as a referral order, the boy was disqualified from driving for five years.
His parents, who attended court, must pay £85 costs and a £26 victim surcharge and were both handed sixmonth parenting orders.
