Refugee influx is at its highest level since 1945

MORE refugees have come to the UK since Brexit than at any time since the Second World War, a report says.

About 437,000 people, mainly from Ukraine and Hong Kong, have been granted protection on humanitarian grounds since the start of 2021, when the transition period ended.

The number, disclosed in research by the UK in a Changing Europe and the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, is almost double the post1945 surge when as many as 250,000 Poles arrived in Britain.

Ukrainians make up almost half of those granted protection, at 217,000. Hong Kongers are the second largest group, at 154,000.
