1901
Britain’s first submarine Holland 1 entered service. Designed and built in secret, it had a crew of eight and could travel just 20 nautical miles whilst submerged.
1937
In the run-up to the Second World War, the U-class submarine was rolled out. In total 49 were built, with each carrying eight torpedoes and a crew of 36.
1960
The UK launched its first nuclear-powered submarine, HMS Dreadnought (right). It was launched by the Queen on Trafalgar Day and stayed in service until 1980.
1982
HMS Conqueror made history by becoming the first nuclear-powered submarine to sink a surface ship, downing General Belgrano during the Falklands War.
1993
The first of the four submarines that carry Trident missiles, HMS Vanguard, was commissioned. At least one of the quartet is always at sea as part of the deterrent.
2010
HMS Astute entered service, marking the latest generation in UK attack submarines. It has an unlimited range and can spend up to 90 days submerged.
