The Wrong Man (1956, b/w) TCM, 3.55pm ★★★★

The idea is an old one – coincidence leading to unjust incrimination – but Hitchcock’s docudrama approach here is starkly atypical. It follows Manny (Henry Fonda), a man subjected to a Kafka-esque arrest after he is mistaken for an armed robber: the more he cooperates with police, the guiltier he appears to them. The nervous breakdown of his wife (Vera Miles) lends this film a grim, fatalistic tone.
