Treated as a fraud
SIR – My mother died in October 2022 and, having funded herself in a care home for two years, left an estate worth less than £50,000.
Probate (Letters, March 7) was granted within a few weeks, and the funds distributed to the beneficiaries.
Then the Department for Work and Pensions contacted me, saying it had reason to suspect that my mother had been paid too much pension credit at some stage in her life. I have now been given eight weeks to provide fully annotated, itemised bank statements going back over three years, and a statement of assets going back to 2005.
It’s a pity other benefit fraudsters don’t seem to be chased so diligently. Keith Appleyard
