Cameras switched for cat food in Amazon scam

- By Jack Simpson

SOME Amazon shoppers’ orders for expensive cameras and computers are being swapped for pet food and face masks.

The BBC has reported on cases of consumers ordering items worth hundreds of pounds, only to receive back cheap household goods. In one case, a shopper bought a Sony Alpha 6-400 camera, priced at £900, and a Tamron telephoto lens priced at £520, only to open his package to see a tin of cat food.

According to the BBC, Amazon initially refused a refund because the shopper had signed for the parcel but eventually agreed to return his money.

In another example, a 15-year-old who had saved up to buy a £400 computer was greeted with a box of pink surgical masks when he opened his package.

Another customer received a pair of shoes instead of the £2,000 Panasonic Lumix camera he had initially ordered.

Amazon is a host site for a number of “Amazon Sellers”, who for £25 a month can use the platform to sell products.

In a statement to the BBC, Amazon said it was investigating the cases.
