PM to invite Biden to Good Friday celebration
RISHI SUNAK will today i nvite Joe Biden to visit Northern Ireland for the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement next month.
The Prime Minister said he is “keen” for the US president to be in Belfast f or the celebration after Britain and the EU struck a deal to end the Brexit stand-off.
Plans for a visit have long been in the works, but it was only deemed possible if the UK and EU resolved the row over Brexit border arrangements. It is now set to go ahead following the signing of the Windsor Framework, which will reduce red tape on goods travelling from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
Mr Sunak is set to personally extend the invitation to Mr Biden when the pair meet at a summit in San Diego today.
Speaking to reporters on his plane ahead of the meeting, the Prime Minister said: “I’ll be keen to invite him to come. We’ve got this very important milestone to commemorate and celebrate.”
