Crash survivor ‘gutted’ after learning of friends’ deaths
A SURVIVOR of a car crash who has “only just” learnt of his friends’ deaths has spoken for the first time.
Shane Loughlin, 32, remains in a critical condition in hospital after the accident in Cardiff on March 4.
He and Sophie Russon, 20, are the only ones who survived the accident after a night out in Maesglas, Newport.
Eve Smith, 21, Rafel Jeanne, 24, and Darcy Ross, 21, all died in the crash.
In a statement posted on a friend’s Facebook page, Mr Loughlin wrote: “Only just found out what happened just want to say sorry to everyone and thank you everyone who helped with the search party and thank you for everyone wishing me well, I’ll be back soon, love you all.
“Rip Rafel, Eve, and Darcy. Can’t believe it gutted is an understatement heart goes out to all families and friends of the people that has passed.
“Long way to recovery mentally and physically but we’ll get there.”
The white Volkswagen Tiguan that the group were in was not found until two days after the crash, with Mr Loughlin and Ms Russon undiscovered in the car for this period. It is believed that the car left the carriageway on the A48 and ended up in a woodland area.
South Wales Police said post-mortem examinations were ongoing and the families of those who died continued to be supported by specialist family liaison officers. Asst Chief Constable Jason Davies said: “Specialist officers will continue to carry out a detailed investigation which will enable us to provide the facts of what happened during the early hours of Saturday morning.”
Police also stated that there is no suggestion another vehicle was involved.
