A chance encounter with Topol after the show
SIR – Chaim Topol (Obituaries, March 10) lit up the stage when we went to see Fiddler on the
Roof in 1983. Afterwards, having fed our teenage sons at a nearby pizza place, on returning to the side of the theatre where we had parked our car, we saw Topol emerge from a side entrance.
We held back a bit, but our bolder younger son walked up to him to say how much we had enjoyed the performance.
For the next 10 minutes we all enjoyed a most friendly chat with the great man until his minder, a military friend, urged him to move on.
As he drove away in his Jaguar, he gave us a friendly wave. What a wonderful man he was.
