SIR – I would add to James Hall’s article (March 11) about the phenomenal success of the Inspector Morse series that a major part in achieving it was played by Barrington Pheloung’s extraordin­ary score.

Like Beethoven’s Fifth, the opening notes of the Morse theme are immediatel­y recognisab­le. Pheloung’s clever mix of classical favourites and his own incidental music blend seamlessly to create the brooding atmosphere of the gleaming spires.
