Feta late than never... eating Greek cuts dementia
Mediterranean-style diets reduce the chance of developing the condition later in life, research finds
EATING a Mediterranean diet may cut your chance of developing dementia by almost a quarter, even if you are at high risk for the disease, a study has found.
Research at Newcastle University shows that people who eat lots of olive oil, grains, fish, fruit, vegetables and nuts, are 23 per cent less likely to develop dementia later in life.
The benefits were seen for people who are genetically predisposed to developing dementia as well as those who are at low risk, which the researchers say indicates the diet may have a “protective effect”.
More than 60,000 middle-aged people who were enrolled in the UK Biobank study were included in the research and were followed for about a decade. Scientists analysed how much a person’s self-reported eating habits aligned with the Mediterranean diet and compared it to how many diagnoses of dementia there were among the cohort.
A total of 882 out of the 60,298 were diagnosed with dementia during the study follow-up. Data show the absolute reduction in risk of dementia was 0.55 per cent, leading to a relative reduction in risk of 23 per cent.
Dr Oliver Shannon, a lecturer in human nutrition and ageing at Newcastle University and lead author on the study, said: “Dementia impacts the lives of millions of individuals throughout the world, and there are currently limited options for treating this condition.
“Finding ways to reduce our risk of developing dementia is, therefore, a priority for researchers and clinicians.
“Our study suggests that eating a more Mediterranean-like diet could be one strategy to help individuals lower their risk of dementia.”
Dr Shannon told The Daily Telegraph that few people in the study registered a perfect score for adherence to the Mediterranean diet, but adopting even just a few culinary habits was beneficial.
He said: “Those who had the highest level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet tended to eat a diet that was rich in fruits and vegetables [two or three portions of each per day], and contained moderate amounts [about three portions of each per week] of fish and other seafood, pulses, legumes and nuts.
“In addition, they tended to use olive oil as their main cooking fat and consumed a moderate amount of wine [about seven small glasses per week].
“The diets of these individuals also tended to be lower in foods that are more traditionally associated with a classic Western diet such as red and processed meat, sugar-sweetened drinks, sweets and butter.
“In contrast, the individuals with the lowest level of adherence to a Mediterranean diet tended to consume less fruit and vegetables, nuts, legumes and fish and contained more red and processed meat, sugar-sweetened drinks, and pastries.
“Our results suggest that even one or two small changes to an individual’s diet could make a big difference.”
However, some scientists have questioned the methodology of the study, which was published in BMC Medicine.
Prof David Curtis, of the University College London Genetics Institute, questioned whether the findings could be explained by people with a Mediterranean diet being fitter overall, and not as a direct consequence of their food choices. He said: “It is not clear that a [Mediterranean] diet itself reduces dementia risk, although it is plausible that it might do so.
“In my opinion, if there is an effect of diet then it is more likely to be on cardiovascular health in general and hence to impact dementia due to vascular disease rather than Alzheimer’s.”
He also called it “disappointing” that the study only included white participants and excluded other ethnicities.
Dr Susan Mitchell, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “There is a wealth of evidence that eating a healthy, balanced diet can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. But evidence for specific diets is much less clear cut.
“While there are no sure-fire ways to prevent dementia yet, a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, along with plenty of exercise and not smoking, all contribute to good heart health, which in turn helps to protect our brain from diseases that lead to dementia.”
