Nicholas Ray’s strikingly shot Western (with cinematography by the revered Lee Garmes) is a fizzing tale of wounded pride set amid the overtly macho world of US rodeos. Jeff Mccloud (Robert Mitchum) quits the sport after an injury and gets a job on a ranch; but after striking up a friendship with Wes (Arthur Kennedy), who then heads into the ring, Mccloud is lured back to compete.
