Four horses that won the hearts of the public
Red Rum
First horse to win Grand National three times, runner-up twice, between 1973 and 1977. Trained by Ginger Mccain, a second-hand car salesman, in a stable behind his garage forecourt.
Desert Orchid
Charismatic, easily distinguished front-running grey. He hated Cheltenham, but that did not stop him winning there in an epic 1989 Gold Cup when it was so wet the race was nearly abandoned.
Frankel
Outstanding Flat horse of the last half century, unbeaten in 14 starts. His story was intertwined with trainer Sir Henry Cecil’s return to the top after a decade in the doldrums and fight with terminal cancer.
Aldaniti
Horse that carried Bob Champion, who had just recovered from testicular cancer , to one of the most emotional Grand National wins ever in 1982.
