Security threat US may outlaw app if Chinese owners remain
Tiktok could be banned in the US if its Chinese owners do not sell their stake, the Biden administration has warned.
The app’s owners, the Chinese company Bytedance, is increasingly being targeted by lawmakers over fears user data could be passed to China’s government.
Tiktok has now said that the US treasury-led committee on foreign investment in the United States, has demanded that the Chinese owners of the app sell their shares or face a possible Us-wide ban.
Beijing hit back yesterday, urging Washington to “stop unreasonably suppressing” Tiktok, and said the US has produced no evidence that the app threatens national security.
