KING AND QUEEN AT THE VATICAN. RECEPTION BY THE POPE. A CORDIAL INTERVIEW.

- FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ROME, Wednesday.

King George and Queen Mary had another crowded day of visits and receptions, beginning in the morning with their meeting with the Pope at the Vatican, continued by a visit after lunch to St. Peter’s and the Vatican Library, and by attendance at the garden party at the British Embassy, and at the gala performance at the Costanzi Theatre. The diplomatic dinner at the Quirinal last night was a most important function, and was attended by all the diplomatic representatives in Rome, including M. Barrère, the Ambassador of France, and Mme. Barrère; Mr. Washburn Child, American Ambassador, and Mrs. Child; the Belgian Minister and his wife, the Japanese Ambassador, and numerous other diplomatic personages. There were no speeches, but after dinner their Majesties held an informal reception.

This morning was taken up entirely with the visit to the Vatican. Their Majesties with their suite left the Quirinal shortly after ten o’clock, and drove to the Villa Patrizi, the temporary residence of the Hon. Theo Russell, Minister to the Holy See. The villa, situated at the upper end of the Via San Nicolo Tolentino, was prettily decorated with flowers for the occasion of their Majesties’ short sojourn. They arrived towards 10.30 a.m., and were received by Mr. Russell and the staff of the quiet little Legation to the Vatican. His Majesty wore Field-marshal’s uniform. Her Majesty wore a black dress with a fichu of black Honiton lace fastened over her forehead by a clasp of brilliants. Their Majesties left the seat of the Legation immediately, and were saluted by the usual sympathetic crowd waiting to see them pass. Papal motor-cars conveyed them to the Vatican.
