Biden’s family enriched by foreigners, say Republicans
JOE BIDEN’S son Hunter and the president’s brother James received millions of dollars from shadowy figures in China and Romania, Republicans claim.
James Comer, chairman of the House of Representatives oversight committee, claims bank records show a wideranging scheme by the US president’s relatives to trade off the family name.
There is no evidence that any payments were made to Joe Biden, either during or after leaving the vice-president’s office under Barack Obama.
Abbe Lowell, a lawyer for Hunter Biden, said: “Today’s so-called ‘revelations’ are retread, repackaged mis-statements of perfectly proper meetings and business by private citizens.”
Mr Comer said bank records showed that a Romanian client of Hunter Biden sent more than $3million (£2.4million) to his associate, Rob Walker, rather than the law firm for which he was working between 2015 and 2017.
It has long been known that Hunter Biden did legal consulting work for Gabriel Popoviciu, a wealthy Romanian who was convicted of corruption in 2016.
Mr Walker later wired around $1million in instalments to Hunter Biden, James Gillian, another business associate, and Hallie Biden, the widow of the president’s oldest son, Beau.
Republicans also claim they have found payments of $100,000 to Hunter Biden’s professional corporation from two Chinese nationals connected to CEFC, an energy conglomerate.
They allege one of the individuals “used CEFC to bribe and corruptly influence foreign officials”.
The White House dismissed the whole investigation as “yet another political stunt”.
