Labour can win back voters though it will take time

- By Ian Murray MP

The Labour Party is under new leadership.

Keir Starmer has been successfully holding the shambolic UK Government to account, and it’s little wonder that he is winning back voters.

When he challenges the Tories, he does so because he puts people’s jobs and public services first – not flags and borders.

Labour’s recovery will take time, but under Keir we are listening to people in every community and setting out our vision for a fairer Britain.

Not the divisive and negative visions of the Tories and the SNP; but a positive vision for a country that works for everyone.

As Keir said himself in his autumn virtual conference speech, ‘a country which is the best place to grow up in and the best place to grow old in’. We know that winning back trust takes time.

It starts with being a credible opposition, and that’s what we’re doing. Supporting measures to tackle the coronavirus crisis, but demanding a functioning test and trace system and greater support for people’s jobs.

Constructive opposition; not the SNP’s grievance-seeking strategy.

We want to change lives for the better – here in Edinburgh, and in every community in the land. Politics is about priorities. Labour’s priorities are properly funded universal public services, world class education, investment in skills, working to generate high quality jobs, a greener economy, and an enduring commitment to build a more equal society.

Not constitutional division or lines on maps.

We share the priorities of the people of Scotland.
