Ingleby Gallery - Caroline Walker

-

Ingleby Gallery are showing one long exhibition from 3 October to 19 December 2020.

This will be Caroline Walker's Janet.

Walker is known for her striking paintings of women and usually women at work.

The narratives are little glimpses of ordinary women going about their day to day lives in either public or private settings. Often the artist takes photographs first and sometimes these are taken covertly. Later she works these images up into lustrous, luminous oil paintings.

This is the first exhibition at Ingleby Gallery for Walker and she turns her attention close to home.

Janet is her mother and the series of paintings depicts her as she goes about all kinds of daily tasks, cooking, cleaning, tidying and tending the garden of her Fife home. This is where Walker grew up.

There is an illustrated new book on the artist by Hettie Judah.

“While Janet extends Walker’s long-held interest in women’s work, the series is also a loving undertaking. The artist offers us her mother with great pride, both in particular, and on behalf of other mothers over- looked and working out of sight.” - Hettie Judah

As well as the Edinburgh exhibition, the work will also be presented at the inaugural exhibition at Cromwell Place South Kensington, London from 5 to 11 October.

Ingleby Gallery, 33 Barony Street, EH3 6NX
