Scouts and HUSSARS
The Selous Scouts, to which Francis Henn refers (Letters,
June issue), was the Rhodesian Armoured Car Regiment (Selous Scouts) formed in 1960. They were in the order of battle of the Rhodesia and Nyasaland Army and disbanded in 1963 at the break-up of the Federation.
Their affiliation to 11th Hussars was announced in the year of their disbandment.
As Henn says, the close and friendly relationship between the Selous Scouts’ predecessor units and 11th Hussars pre-dated the announcement of the affiliation by many years.
The name, Selous Scouts, was taken subsequently by a unit of the Rhodesian Army formed, as Captain Duncan Wiggins notes
(Letters, April issue), in 1973.
They were part of Rhodesia’s special forces. The unit was “disbanded” in 1980. Martyn Hobrough, Cann Common, Dorset
