BAILY’S MAGAZINE OF SPORTS AND PASTIMES: AN INDEX AND BIBLIOGRAPHY
Chris Harte has compiled an accurate and extensive bibliography of Baily’s magazine, the green-backed sporting favourite that ran from 1860 to 1926. A direct contemporary of The Field
(“the country gentleman’s newspaper”, as it was known, appeared weekly then),
Harte references The Field in his work as a source of authors and contributors to Baily’s, and uses several other contemporary sporting magazines for the bibliography.
The task has taken 18 years, although in that time he has published 13 other books. As the possessor of all 726 issues of the magazine it would appear he was well-suited to the project.
Baily’s lost 90% of its subscribers during the First World War and was never to recover. This bibliography, limited to 50 copies, offers access to that vibrant sporting world that once was. By Chris Harte
