The Field

Afghan hounds

-

Regarding the excellent article The Days of the Jackals [August issue], the author notes that during the Second Afghan War, the pack of foxhounds of the

16th Lancers marched with the regiment to Kabul and back.

There was precedent. One regiment took its pack along for the First Afghan War. Alas, its fate was different. It perished due to disease and the need for food on the part of the expeditionary force, all but one of whom was killed or taken prisoner. See William Dalrymple’s excellent book, Return of a King.
