Hat check

-

I came across an article about the correct deerstalking clothing and, in particular, the deerstalker ‘without flaps’. I have worn one of these for many years and it is a favourite piece of kit. I know they are commonly called ‘gillie hats’ but some years ago a BBC programme referred to them as ‘Hexham hats’. As well as being a centre for leather glove making, Hexham had a thriving hat industry. I have tried to authenticate the name but, sadly, ‘the gillie’ seems to have achieved dominance. I would be most appreciative if someone could provide some clarification. Ian Hepple
