THE SOUND OF MUSIC
Only a few cultural events are going ahead this summer, but the Buxton International Festival, in Buxton, Derbyshire, is flying the flag for music and literature. Taking place from 8 to 25 July at Frank Matcham’s bijou opera house and other venues, it features opera, concerts, talks and even wildlife walks. Highlights include Malcolm Arnold’s The Dancing Master and Pauline Viardot’s retelling of Cinderella, Cendrillon.
COVID-19 precautions mean seating is reduced and booking is essential (buxtonfestival.co.uk). –
OF MOTHS AND MEN
An exhibition at Castle Howard, in Yorkshire, highlights the decline of moths, the numbers of which have been dropping at an alarming rate. For the past two years, artist Sarah Gillespie has researched, drawn and engraved moths in a bid to raise awareness of their fate and celebrate their beauty. The works on display at Castle Howard are mezzotints – a technique she chose to represent the insects’ nocturnal life. Moth is on until 5 September 2021 (castlehoward.co.uk).
