ranted being booed off at half-time.”

Dominic Blizzard opened the scoring on 15 minutes, sneaking the ball over the line from eight yards after Jamie McAllister’s crossed free kick caused confusion – though James Hayter claimed to have had the final touch.

Richard Hinds added a second from another poorly defended free-kick, with the defender scuffing a volley past Simon Eastwood to provoke damning boos from the home fans.

Paul Benson gave the hosts a lifeline on 54 minutes, following up Adam Webster’s wayward effort to slot into an empty net.

Portsmouth kept the Glovers under sustained pressure but their best efforts – a top-corner shot from Benson and a last-minute header from Lubomir Michalik – were well saved by Marek Stech.

Yeovil boss Gary Johnson admitted his side’s first-half show was spot on.

He said:“The first half was our best half of football all season – that’s the kind of performance you lay in bed at night dreaming about. We knew Portsmouth would have to make changes for the second half and throw people forwards and they did that.

“If we’d been a bit more clinical with a couple of chances we’d have got a third goal and killed the game off, but we didn’t and that made the game more exciting. I don’t know whether they still think they are, but for me little old Yeovil have come to a big club and turned them over.”
