Wilson is looking for a new partner

- By Chris Bailey

LAST TIME Callum Wilson played for Coventry, Leon Clarke was his strike partner. After being out with a shoulder injury for two months, the 22-year-old returns today, but Clarke has been sold to Wolves.

The injury ended a fine partnership that brought 32 goals between them this season before the turn of the year.

Against Shrewsbury Wilson has to begin to forge a new partnership with loan signings Nathan Delfouneso and Chuba Akpom – but he is confident that he can pick up where he left off.

“A lot of people are saying that there’s pressure on me but I’m not feeling it,” said Wilson.“I just want to get out there and show everyone what I can do again.

“At times it’s been frustrating for me, but I’ve had to keep my emotions in check. Now I’m back I want to help my teammates out. I’m ready to score some goals again.

“It’s been fantastic to get back out onto the pitch. I’ve been working with Chuba recently, and it’s been good so far.

“There are similarities to him and me. Hopefully we can get a good partnership going.

“Hopefully soon, the goals will start flowing in again.”

By contract, Shrewsbury – who started the weekend second bottom and three points from safety – have scored just 31 league goals.

But new boss Mike Jackson started with a 3-2 win at Notts County last Saturday to mark his permanent appointment.

And the winning goalscorer from that match, Dave McAllister, says they must make sure the revival does not stop at one win.

“We were hoping that when we won on New Year’s Day against Oldham it would start us off, but it didn’t really happen,” said McAllister.

“But to win the way we did, coming back from two goals down to win 3-2, we really need to use it as a catalyst to kick on.We definitely can get out of this, 100 per cent.

“We have 14 games left, and who says we can’t get out of this? We firmly believe we can.”
