Drennan’s aiming to make wait worthwhile
IT TOOK a while for Portsmouth to land loan target Michael Drennan but the Irish striker has vowed to make the wait worthwhile.
Drennan will be back on Monday at Chesterfield after opening his Pompey account with a consolation goal in a 5-1 drubbing against Scunthorpe last weekend.
It was his first game since signing on loan from Aston Villa and this time round, the 20-yearold is hoping for a happier goal.
He already has his first win for Pompey – a midweek 1-0 victory over Accrington – after travelling the length of the country to join from a onemonth loan at Carlisle.
Pompey boss Richie Barker tried to sign him two months ago and Drennan is keen to impress after struggling with a foot injury.
“It’s good to know Portsmouth had interest in me – I need to try to be more prolific in front of goal and hopefully that will come here,” he said. “They tried to get me two months ago before I went to Carlisle.
“When the loan ended Portsmouth came back in and I thought:‘That’s where I want go. They’re a big club and I want to show what I can do.’
“The two teams who wanted me were opposite ends of the country but it’s lucky they want me.
“My first goal was a consolation so I didn’t take much from it. I should have scored against Accrington but didn’t take my chances.”
Chesterfield’s promotion push had a boost on Tuesday night after four goals in seven minutes blew away Cheltenham at Whadon Road.
But boss Paul Cook says centre-back and captain Ian Evatt was the key man.“There’s a long way to go but we’re lucky we’ve got a captain like Ian,” said Cook.“I don’t often single players out but he was absolutely amazing against Cheltenham.
“People forget he was out for a year. That was probably as good a centrehalf performance as I’ve seen in my career. That’s a big statement from someone like me.”
