Mark says relax to main man Madden

- By Lee Jones

SCUNTHORPE boss Mark Robins is urging Paddy Madden to chill out more after the striker’s double saw off hosts Barnsley.

Madden bagged a stylish double to help Scunthorpe win at Oakwell for the first time in more than 50 years – and bring them within touching distance of exiting the bottom four.

The Irish striker took his tally for the season to nine against the inconsistent Tykes, equalising less than 60 seconds after the home side had gone in front before scoring from a brilliant run and finish in first-half stoppage time, which proved to be the winner.

“Paddy’s a good finisher. He puts a great deal of pressure on himself because he scored a lot of goals at this level for Yeovil,” said delighted Iron boss Robins, on his return to one of his former clubs.

“He’s a real handful for defenders and he was relaxed here, which showed.

“We went a goal down against the run of play but the one quickly after set the tone for us – it was relief more than anything to see the ball hit back of net. The second goal was good enough to win any game.

“I wouldn’t say we were under the cosh second half.We were organised and there were some really solid performances.

“We worked hard for our chances and for each other. I thought we were really good value for the three points.”

Scunthorpe were the better side for the opening half hour, against a Tykes team who saw ninegoal striker Sam Winnall, who left United in the summer, limp off injured.

But the hosts went in front when Marcello Trotta crashed a first-time shot into the top corner just before the half-hour mark. But they had barely finished celebrating when Gary McSheffrey was denied by keeper Ross Turnbull and Madden swept in the rebound. The Iron maintained the ascendancy and when the Tykes defence backed off the Irishman when he picked up a pass on the halfway line, he ran to the edge of the box before firing home.

Although the Tykes were better after the break, they could not finish a series of decent openings – Devante Cole blasting the best of them over the bar in the 70th minute.

Barnsley boss Danny Wilson groaned:“I don’t think we’ve played anything like we can do.We had no intensity to our game and our decision making and fluency was poor.

“I thought scoring against the run of play might click us into a gear a bit but we didn’t get a chance to get a grip on the game because we conceded so quickly after scoring. For that to happen is criminal, amateurish.”
